The Magic of Mulching: Tips and Tricks
Mulch is a simple and effective means to create a beautiful, healthy growing environment. Flower beds, walkways, vegetable gardens—mulch enhances virtually any outside space. Using the right kind of mulch the right way can also significantly reduce water usage by up to 50%.
Routine mulching will
ü Improve the health of the soil and beautify the appearance of your landscaping.
ü Keep weeds down
ü Reduce the need for water
Mulches vary in their appearance, composition, and texture. These distinctive characteristics determine how, where, and why mulch is used.
For example:
- Varying appearances—
- For a soothing, natural-looking garden, use dark-colored hardwood mulches made from hardwood trees and bark. Greendell Natural Hardwood will work well. Many professional landscapers prefer the Midi Hardwood Mulch.
- For a deep, brilliant-looking garden, consider using a color enhanced bark mulch or decorative rock. Greendell Brown or Black Color Enhanced Hardwood will complement your color scheme as will our selection of decorative rock and natural stone.
- For utilitarian gardens such as vegetable Greendell Forrest Fines is an excellent choice.
- For playground areas and walking paths, ask for Greendell Sof-Step.
If you want to kill off old sod or weeds, put down weed barrier fabric directly over the area then cover with a thick layer of compost or mulch. This method adds organic matter into the soil while removing what it is you don’t want growing there.
Mulch new plants with Greendell Forrest Fines or Midi Hardwood. These hardwood bark products will help preserve moisture and encourage root growth during the growing season. They will also provide nutrients to the soil as they decompose. Mulching again in the fall will help protect roots during the cold months. Be sure to remember your evergreens, perennials, and groundcover because they, too, need a protective shield from winter’s icy conditions.
Mulching allows you to have a green, healthy garden and recycle nature’s products. Now, that’s magic!
